‘The Waste’ (2012)

- An 8hr performative intervention into the fabric of Whitechapel, London as part of DRESS CODE.

Lasting the length of an average working day, the performance installation uses waste threads that mirror the colours commonly used within a ‘refugee bag’: A utilitarian carrying device made from cheap, nylon threads weaved together.

The work acts as a transient and performative meditation upon belonging, migration, immigration, waste, and linear narratives against the context of a busy arterial road.  

Whilst at the same time referencing the multi-linear history of textiles in the East End and the deeply influential impact of the Huguenot, Jewish, and now, Bangladeshi migrant population.

DRESS CODE

Dress Code by Ultimate Holding Company is inspired by the development of pattern in Whitechapel’s textile heritage. Commissioned by Deborah Smith Projects and Ben Eastop and funded by Tower Hamlets as part of the High Street 2012 initiative.

Look out for the inflatable ‘dressed’ structure in Altab Ali Park, a mobile bicycle ‘sculpture’ bedecked with textile bags moving along the high street, as well as miles of thread woven between trees at Mile End Waste this summer.

Here’s what’s happening this Saturday:

INFLATE, an inflatable ‘dressed’ structure. Altab Ali Park, White Church Lane, London E1 7QR

BIKE, a mobile bike ‘sculpture’ festooned with carrier bags customised with textiles. Between Altab Ali Park and Mile End Waste

THE WASTE, an 8-hour durational performance by Robyn Woolston. Mile End Waste, Mile End Road, E1
